About Bedside

Bedside is an independent newsroom that covers health and medicine: the science, the business, the policy and the people inside hospitals. We report on the labs where new treatments start, the companies that sell them, the agencies that approve and pay for them, and the clinics where patients live with the results.

What we cover

We have reporters on biotech, pharma, public health and health policy, and a science desk that reads new research before it reaches the headlines. Our data desk builds its own datasets and publishes the code behind every analysis. Second Opinion, edited by an emergency physician, runs essays from clinicians, researchers and patients.

How we report

  • We say what the evidence shows, and what it doesn’t. Every story about a new study names who did it, how big it was and what it cannot tell you.
  • We don’t give medical advice. Our reporting is not a substitute for a conversation with your own doctor.
  • We take no money from the companies we cover. No drugmaker, device maker, hospital system or insurer sponsors our journalism or sees a story before it runs.
  • We name sources whenever we can. When we can’t, we say why, and we use anonymous sources only when they were in a position to know.
  • We correct mistakes in public, at the bottom of the story, with the date.
